Course Description

Are you interested in learning about lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, and questioning+ (LGBQQ+) college students?

This e-learning short course will review terminologies and statistics on LGBQQ+ student communities in the US, and internationally, as well as explore strategies and resources for supporting LGBQQ students studying abroad.  

Through this course, you will:

  • Learn about key terms such as sexual and/or romantic attraction v. sexual and/or romantic  orientation, historical and contemporary perspectives on the term queer, differentiating gender identity v. sexuality, etc.
  • Learn about LGBQQ international students and campus climate in higher education
  • Better understand the needs of and how to support LGBQQ students abroad

About the instructor

Director of LGBT Campus Resource Center, UCLA

Raja Gopal Bhattar

Raja Gopal Bhattar (they/them/theirs) is the Director of UCLA’s LGBT Campus Resource Center. They are a nationally-recognized social justice trainer and educator and have published several articles on intersectional identity development and the experiences of LGBTQ people, immigrants, first-generation students, international students and people of color in higher education. They hold a Master’s of Arts in Higher Education and Organizational Change from UCLA, a Master’s in Higher Education and Student Affairs Administration from the University of Vermont and Bachelor’s in Psychology and Hispanic Literature from Boston University. Raja has served on several national and regional boards and has been featured in The Advocate Magazine, Huffington Post, India Abroad Magazine, Hinduism Today Magazine and several other news outlets.
