Course Description

Men are less likely to attend college and participate in specialized college programming, such as education abroad.

This e-learning short course presents data on and gaps in our knowledge about cisgender male participation in study abroad in US higher education. The course overviews current literature on this topic and presents findings from a research study that used mixed methods to consider the question, why do male students study abroad at much lower rates than female students?

Through this course, you will:

  • Become well versed in current data and literature on and about this population
  • Gain insights and learn about key findings from a recent study comparing male and female participation in education abroad

About the instructor

Assistant Dean for Global Education and Curriculum, Michigan State University

James Lucas

James M. Lucas, Ph.D., currently works as the Assistant Dean for Global Education and Curriculum in the Michigan State University Provost’s Office. In this capacity, Dr. Lucas works on issues related to integration of global education into the undergraduate curriculum, first-year experience initiatives, enhancing connections between diverse student populations, as well as policy and curriculum issues related to education abroad. Currently, he is working with the general education units to enhance the global content and connectivity of these courses to campus learning outcomes and to devise a series of first-year pathways of incoming students that include best practice support systems. He obtained his Ph.D. from MSU in 2009 from the Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education program; his dissertation was a mixed methods inquiry into male participation on study abroad programs. Dr. Lucas is still interested in this topic, and he’s about to take his second set of all male, fraternity students to Rome on an education abroad program.
