Preparing Program Directors for Managing Student Conflict and MicroAggressions Abroad

Course Description

This e-learning short course equips program leaders with skills, tools, and resources to address the myriad of student conflict issues abroad towards safe and inclusive programs. This includes how to address interpersonal intragroup relationships, relationship conflicts between students and/or between students and local residents, changing intragroup cohort dynamics, and student-student microaggressions, such as exoticization of local community members, invalidation of intra-ethnic differences, pathologizing cultural values/communication styles in host cultures, and so on.

The intended learning outcomes for this course include:

Define conflict and microaggressions
Identify strategies for microresistance throughout the education abroad process
Apply microresistance strategies to combat microaggressions while abroad
Leverage resources related to microresistances on campus and in community

Amy Exah

Amy Exah is the Assistant Director for Faculty-Led Programs in the International Office at the University of Texas at Austin. Amy has over 18 years of experience in International Education, including working for a third-party provider where she managed faculty-led programming in Cuba and led various programs abroad. Amy spent 14 years living and working abroad in Ghana, Guatemala and Peru as an educator in the international school system and was involved in various community development projects. In her current role at UT Austin, Amy works directly with faculty who lead students abroad, and supports them in the design and development of inclusive programming during recruitment, pre-departure, in-country and re-entry. Amy is committed to increasing access and removing barriers to international education for all students, particularly groups traditionally underrepresented in study abroad.

Tasha Souza

Tasha Souza is the Associate Director for the Center for Teaching & Learning and Professor of Communication at Boise State University. Most recently, Dr. Souza was the Faculty Associate for Inclusive Excellence for Humboldt State University (HSU) and a Fulbright scholar at the University of the West Indies in Barbados. Previously, she was the founding Faculty Development Coordinator for HSU’s Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching where she served as an Instructional Consultant at the Center for Instructional Development and Research at the University of Washington. Dr. Souza has taught in 6 different countries. She is a consultant on communication, inclusive excellence, and pedagogy and has published in the areas of difficult dialogues in the classroom, transforming classroom conflict, discussion-based teaching, confronting microaggressions with microresistance, instructional communication, service-learning pedagogy, and intercultural conflict.
