Course Description

This e-learning short course will provide program directors with an overview of their roles and co-curricular responsibilities in leading inclusive education abroad programs. This includes understanding who are program directors and who supports them, the differences between and the ramifications for on-campus teaching versus program leadership abroad, mentoring for inclusion abroad, and managing, promoting and modeling inclusion abroad.

The intended learning outcomes for this course includes:

Identify characteristics of program directors
Learn about the important differences between the on-campus faculty role and the role of education abroad program directors, including implications for teaching, learning, and leadership
Understand how program directors can better prepare themselves for managing their roles abroad with regards to diversity, inclusion, and equity
Apply case scenarios for inclusive teaching and learning abroad

About the instructor

Karenanna Creps

Karenanna Creps is a doctoral student in the Michigan State University (MSU) College of Education's Department of Curriculum, Instruction, and Teacher Education. Her first education abroad experience was as a high schooler on a French class field trip to France. Later on, Karenanna worked for two academic years as an Assistante d'Anglais with French middle and high school students through the French Ministry of Education (Ministère de l'Education Nationale Française) and was a chaperone on a French high school's English language immersion field trip to Ireland. She has been a group leader for two high school theatre immersion summer programs in France through The Experiment in International Living. She has been a graduate fellow on programs in England, France, Germany, and Indonesia. Her arts-based dissertation research is an examination of the curricula and pedagogies on an MSU Freshman Seminar Abroad program that she designed and led as faculty-of-record in Barcelona and Bilbao, Spain. This summer, she will be faculty-of-record on an MSU Freshman Seminar Abroad program in Italy. Her recent poetic inquiry research paper, Get Published, Now: An Introduction to Qualitative Education Research (QER), was published in Qualitative Inquiry in 2018. She has a BFA in Theatre Performance - Acting from the University of Michigan's School of Music, Theatre, and Dance, as well as a BA in Arts and Ideas in the Humanities from the Residential College at the same institution. She has an MA in Theatre Education from Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts. Her research interests include: arts-based research, humanities-oriented research, poetic inquiry, the curricula and pedagogies of education abroad, experiential intercultural education, and arts education.

Pamela Roy

Pamela Roy is the founder of the Consultancy for Global Higher Education. She offers project management and strategic leadership in the areas of youth education, diversity and equity, faculty development, and higher education capacity building in the Global South. Some of her clients have included the MasterCard Foundation, Diversity Abroad, Michigan State University’s Alliance for African Partnerships, and Youth Empowerment Programs, Academic Internship Council, Association of American Colleges & Universities, Professionals in Organizational Development Network in Higher Education, and more. Dr. Roy's research expertise includes the global professoriate, gender and economic empowerment, access and inclusion in education abroad, and the ethics of north-south mobility programs. She has led programs to South Africa for 60+ Canadian undergraduate students to engage in teaching, learning and community development, and to Rwanda where she co-planned and co-led the Secondary Education Scholars Convening which offered youth from Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Ghana and Rwanda (MasterCard Foundation Scholars) to find their leadership voice, develop community give back goals, explore career understandings, and create high-value relationships with other youth from across the Continent. She also created the curriculum for and managed the program experience (pre-departure, onsite, and re-entry) for the Global Institute for Inclusive Leadership held in South Africa (June 2017) and New Zealand (January 2018) for cohorts of 10 senior administrators from various universities who were interested in gaining skills to better support their global education and diversity-related work. Dr. Roy has over 15 years of experience in international higher education and has committed her scholarly background and creative leadership abilities to foster community-building at the local, national and international levels. She received her PhD in Higher, Adult, & Lifelong Education from Michigan State University. Her professional activities and publications can be accessed at pamelaroy.net.

Associate Director for Education Abroad at Michigan State University

Inge Steglitz

Dr. Inge Steglitz is the associate director for education abroad at Michigan State University where she oversees education abroad program development and management as well as faculty development and engagement. Her work with current and prospective education abroad program directors ranges from one-on-one consultations to an annual workshop series on various topics designed to support and enhance program leadership. For 8 years, she served as co-facilitator of a faculty learning community on teaching & learning abroad, which recently morphed into a monthly “collegial conversation,” with anyone interested in education abroad invited to participate around a specific theme. Over the years, Inge has taught various courses on intercultural communication and related topics at the University of Minnesota, Augsburg College, Oakland University, and Michigan State University. She has contributed scholarly articles to several books on topics ranging from orientation programming and culture learning/teaching to assessing intercultural competencies. Most recently, she co-edited (with Dr. Barbara Kappler Mikk) the third edition of NAFSA’s “Learning Across Cultures” classic and, with Dr. Pamela Roy and Dr. Alex Akulli, contributed a chapter on education abroad program director preparation to the newest edition of NAFSA’s “Guide to Successful Short-term Programs Abroad,” co-edited by Dr. Catherine Spaeth and Dr. Lisa Chieffo. A member of and regular conference contributor to NAFSA: Association of International Educators for over two decades, Inge has held several national leadership positions in the organization, most recently as the annual conference chair of the 2016 conference.Inge came to the U.S. on a Fulbright. Her PhD in intercultural communication is from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities Campus, where she also worked in the Office of International Education and taught in the department of communication. Her dissertation research conceptualized a model to assess the impact of education abroad on students' cognitive development. She continues to be interested in defining and assessing learning abroad outcomes.
